Driving Tip of the Month

Bay Parking

The examiner on the driving test will expect you to do your bay parking:-

  • Safely
  • Smoothly
  • Under control
  • Making proper use of the accelerator, clutch, brakes and steering
  • Without crossing the white bay marking.

The examiner will also be looking to see that you:-

  • Are aware of other road users
  • Keep looking all around throughout the manoeuvre

    "Name and shame" cameras

Cameras at road works will "name and shame" speeding drivers by displaying their number plates on roadside screens rather than sending them speeding tickets. The cameras were found to be much more effective at cutting speeds than the traditional flash of Gatsos during trials near Birmingham.
Lasers measure the speed of passing vehicles and trigger a number plate recognition camera if it detects the speed limit being broken.
In less than a second, the number plate appears on a large dot matrix screen in full view of the driver and other motorists, alongside a message telling them to slow down. More

New way to measure motorway speed

Hundreds of motorists are being caught speeding daily by a series of linked cameras on the M1 near Leicester.
Speed cameras normally check speed at a specific site, but motorists are being clocked by a series of cameras which work out speed over a longer stretch. More

MPs call for £1,800 road-tax band
A cross-party committee of MPs is preparing to issue a report critical of the chancellor for not going far enough in taxing SUVs and other high-emissions cars.
The committee said that the new £210 road tax band is far too low to deter drivers and instead recommended a maximum bracket of £1,800. More

Road speed limits to be reviewed
A major review of speed limits on A and B roads is to take place. Traffic authorities in England, Scotland and Wales are being asked to conduct reviews which could see 60mph limits coming down on many rural roads.
We could also see the 30mph limit lowing to 20mph. More

    Reg plates for cycles!
Cyclists could soon be forced to put number plates on their bikes in a bid to stamp out pedal-powered law-breakers.
It would mean riders who jump red lights or hurl abuse would be identified and fined - in the same way as drivers. The plan, put forward by London Mayor Ken Livingstone, could be put through Parliament via a Private Members Bill and adopted countrywide.
