How To Book The Theory Test

You can not contact Theory Test Centres directly.
All booking should be done via the DSA booking Service.

Theory test for your iPhone/iPod/iPad

2pass and DSA recommends all car and motorcycle test bookings are made via the official Directgov Website.

Don't use third party booking services because you could pay up to twice as much for your test as you would if you book directly with official Directgov.

Do not apply for your theory test until you are sure you are ready.
If you prepare well you have an excellent chance of passing.

The current fees (30th March 2010) are:-

You can book your theory test via the DSA in a number of ways:-

    On-line via the internet
    The easiest way is to book on line, considering you are already using the internet to view this page!

    Don’t pay any extra for your theory and practical test bookings - make sure they always use the official Directgov website.
    Booking with Directgov guarantees a service that you can trust, and it will always be cheaper than a third party booking service.

    You should be able to:-

  • Book a theory test
  • Change a theory test booking
  • Cancel a theory test booking, or
  • Check a theory test booking
    You will not be able to book another theory test on the same day if :-
    You sat a theory test today and failed; or
    You had a theory test booked for today but did not attend
    During the booking process you will need a provisional driving licence number and your valid credit or debit card.

    If you book your Theory Test online, the DSA will now send your confirmation by email rather than a letter by post. These changes have been made to help speed up the booking process, which means that you will receive confirmation much quicker than before.

    By Phone
    The most popular way to book the theory test is by telephone, using your credit card or debit card. The person who books the test must be the cardholder.
    If you book by this method you’ll be given the date and time of your test immediately.
    You can do this by calling 0300 200 1122 at any time between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday.

    When you phone you should have your or the candidate's provisional driving licence number and your credit or debit card details.
    You will be given a number.
    Take this with you when you attend your test.

    By Post
    No credit card or cheque card.....no problem, just book the test via post.
    Apply for your theory test via application form which you can get from:

    The Postal Address to send the completed application form with your payment either by cheque or postal order ( do not send cash) is shown on the form.


    Documents to take on your driving theory test
    You'll be expected to show both parts of your valid driving licence (the photocard and the paper counterpart) at the test centre.
    If you have an old-style licence without a photo you must also bring a valid passport.
    If you don't show the required documents you won't be allowed to test and you'll lose your fee.

    Special Notes
    If you wish to cancel your theory test appointment, you must give at least three whole working days notice, or you will forfeit your theory test fee. For example if you want to cancel your test and it is on a Tuesday, you will need to ring the booking office by the previous Wednesday afternoon at the latest.
    You can not book for another test until the next day after failing. This is to give time for the booking system to be updated

    DSA announce Theory test centre closures

    Due to over-capacity within its network of theory test centres, DSA has decided to close 11 theory test centres.
    These will merge with neighbouring theory test centres which also have over-capacity and which have good transport links.
    The test centres that have closed are at: Basingstoke, Bath, Birkenhead, Clydebank, Colchester, Dunfermline, Durham, Motherwell, Runcorn, Solihull and Workington.

    Theory and practical test centres are entirely separate and delivery of the practical test remains unaffected.


    The Theory test may be taken at the following test centres.
