Driving Tip of the Month

How 2 Deal With Driving In Snow

Nobody likes driving in the snow and dealing with the delays that result. If you must travel in the snow, taking these steps should increase your chances of getting home again safely.

There's nothing more beautiful than a blanket of new-falling snow. Unless, of course, you're driving in it. Winter snow and ice pose special problems for even the most experienced driver.
Take a few moments to learn these basic rules of winter driving safety.

Owning a car has never been more expensive

According to the RAC's Cost of Motoring Index, drivers now pay £5,500 a year to run their car.

Depreciation is the main factor, with the average owner losing £2,500 per annum - an increase of 22 per cent over 2005. The study also highlighted finance charges, servicing, fuel and tax.

L-test about to go green?

DSA logo The Government hopes to introduce eco-friendly skills to the test. Under new proposals, pupils would be scored down for "revving the engine, jumping from brakes to accelerator, changing down gears unnecessarily or failing to switch off the engine in hold-ups," said Driving Standards Agency (DSA) assistant chief examiner Bob Millard.
The revised test would be part of a bigger shake-up of services being considered by the DSA. Also part of the body's latest consultation is a ban on all soft-tops at test centres - widening the current exclusion beyond the MINI Convertible and Ford Streetka.
In addition, the DSA hopes to step up its anti-fraud measures by giving examiners new powers to seize driving licences if they suspect them to be fake. Only the police are currently allowed to do that.
What's more, the theory test could be extended to include new questions on eco-driving and uninsured motorists. This part of the assessment would see a 33 per cent price hike, to £28.50, while criminal history checks for driving instructors are also recommended. More

MOTs Every 2 years?
Plans to reform the MOT testing system.
The frequency of car inspections chould be reduced to European levels - every other year - rather than the requirement for the yearly test.
This would also mean new cars being eligible for an MOT test after 4 years instead ot the current 3.
The change would save motorists in the UK about £465million.
We will bring more news in future Newsletters.
Legless driver jailed for 1 year
A double amputee has been jailed for a year after leading police on a high-speed car pursuit, using modified broom handles to control the vehicle.

Improving service & safety. Your view please.
The Agency has compiled a package of measures to improve the way it operates. The package is available here. People have until 11 January 2007 to make their views known.

The package focuses on service improvements, safety measures and fee increases. They include:
• investigating the possibility that freight companies could carry out lorry driving tests for their own staff
• increasing the number of questions in theory tests for learner drivers and motorcycle riders, and lengthening the on-road driving element of practical tests taken by bus, coach and lorry drivers
• restricting the use of panel vans and soft-top convertibles on practical car tests
• improving the anti-fraud measures around the driving test
• implementing transitional arrangements to support the introduction of the Driver CPC Directive
• increasing fees for practical motorcycle tests and driving instructor qualification tests.
