3) Bad weather and driving tests

Some driving tests may be affected by winter weather over the next few months.
The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) doesn't conduct practical driving tests in adverse weather conditions, for example when the roads are icy. This is for the safety of both the person taking the test and the examiner.
If you're due to take your practical test, follow the advice given on your appointment email or letter. Call your test centre only if there is snow or ice in your local area on the day of your test.

Watch the DSA video below for more information.

4) Driving tests return to Barry

DSA logo

Driving tests will be returning to Barry as part of a trial bringing practical car tests closer to candidates.
The Barry driving test centre closed earlier this year, with tests moving to Cardiff and Bridgend, but from 5 December 2011 the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) will deliver tests on a part-time basis from the Business Support Centre on Barry Waterfront.
Testing in Barry will take place on a part time basis, initially two days a week, but this may change depending on the level of demand.
In addition to the trial in Barry, DSA is running trials in six other areas across the country. All the trials will be carefully monitored to assess any impact on levels of customer service and the cost of delivery, as well as making sure the integrity of the test is maintained.

DSA will then decide whether the trials can be rolled out on a permanent basis and extended to other areas without a local test centre where there is a significant demand, as well as suitable test routes and venues.
The trials only involve practical car tests; theory test centres are not affected.

5 ) Driving Tip of the Month

Independent driving in the driving test The driving test (for cars, lorries, buses and motorcycles) has changing since 4th October 2010 and was introduced into the Northern Ireland Driving Test on 27th June 2011.

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) introduced a new section covering 'independent driving'. This will last for about 10 minutes during which the candidate will have to drive without step-by-step instructions from the examiner.

The Video below shows you why there is now an Independent part of the Driving Test and what to expect during the test.

Practice makes perfect, so get plenty of practice from a Approved Driving Instructor.

6) Luxury cars in Japan motorway pile-up

A luxury sports car outing in Japan has ended in what may be one of the most expensive car crashes in history.
A Lamborghini, eight Ferraris, three Mercedes-Benz and two other vehicles were involved the pile-up in the southern prefecture of Yamaguchi.
The luxury sports cars were on their way to a motor festival when the crash occurred.
Ten people received minor injuries in the crash, police said.

7) Devon driving test examiner 'bullied over pass rate'

A Devon driving test examiner has told a tribunal her bosses put pressure on her to increase her pass rate.

Nicola Bentley-Lovell, from Sticklepath on Dartmoor, is claiming constructive unfair dismissal against the Driving Standards Agency.

In her statement, she said she had worked as a driving examiner for seven years until October 2010.

But she said she quit after she "sustained a large amount of bullying and harassment for my pass rate".

Mrs Bentley-Lovell claimed in six years, she underwent 165 check tests - where a supervisor sits behind the examiner in the car during a driving test. She said the normal rate for check tests was six to eight times a year.
