Driving Tip of the Month

Dealing with Single Track Roads

On narrow, single-tracked roads use passing places correctly:-
  • Pull into a passing place on your left, or wait opposite a passing place on your right.
  • Give way to vehicles coming uphill where possible.
  • Be prepared to reverse to the nearest passing place so that oncoming vehicles can pass.
  • Don't park in passing places.
Be careful of tractors, horse-riders and cyclists on the road ahead, slow down and leave plenty of room as you pass them.

Tough New Penalties

It`s Good to Talk...But not at the Wheel!
Motorists face tough new penalties for breaking the law by using a hand-held mobile phone while driving from February 27 2007. From that date, the fixed penalty will for the first time include the award of three penalty points as well as doubling the fine to £60.

Euro licences on way

driving licence The familiar green UK driving licence is on the way out.
A single European permit, valid for up to 15 years, will be introduced within seven years to replace all the current versions. This follows the EU transport committee's decision to introduce a document that will be issued to every driver and motorcyclist across Europe.

Vehicle Recall Affecting Driving Tests

DSA logo With effect from 5th February 2007 all Vauxhall Corsa D models taken on the Driving test must have a recall confirmation letter stamped to show the vehicle has been inspected by a dealer under the recall arrangements. More inforamtion from the DSA website. More

Road Toll Tax
The government is planning to scrap the Road tax but replace it with a Road Toll tax.
The idea of tracking every vehicle at all times is sinister and wrong. They can also find out when you are speeding on any road.
Road pricing is already here with the high level of taxation on fuel. The more you travel - the more tax you pay.
It will be an unfair tax on those who live apart from families and poorer people who will not be able to afford the high monthly costs.

Ministers move to close points loophole
Points accumulated by motorists in Northern Ireland do not count in Britain, so they can amass nine there and nine more on the mainland without punishment. Motorists with 12 points in the UK can be banned. Transport Secretary Stephen Ladyman said the loophole was "unacceptable".
SOS telephones facing final call
The end's in sight for emergency telephones, due to lack of use...
Make sure you take your mobile, as emergency telephones are being phased out.
Emergency telephones along a main trunk road could be removed due to high costs and a lack of use, a council has warned. Devon County Council, which provides the phones for the North Devon Link Road, said it shelled out £7,000 on rental and repair in 2006, but only £7.19 was spent on calls.
