Driving Tip of the Month
Joining a Dual-Carriageway
Always look for signs which might indicate a higher speed limit on the dual-carriageway.
See our clips which show how to assess the speeed of the traffic already on the carrigeway.
Some dual-carriageways are similar to motorways, with slip roads to join and leave. However, motorway regulations do not apply and you may come across slow moving vehicles such as cyclists or farm tractors.
Have a look at our series of clips to show how to join a dual-carriageway
Many drug-drivers are going 'undetected'
Roadside checks by police to detect motorists driving under the influence of drugs are failing, according to the RAC.
Research on a number of people who had passed a test found a third did have drugs in their system.
See the video report and other driving related stories at the BBC video site.

Carry drinking water
Drivers should carry drinking water in hot weather advises Highways Agency.
With Met Office forecasters predicting hot weather across many parts of England, the Highways Agency advises drivers to take drinking water with them on their journeys.
"Drivers and their passengers, including pets, can become dehydrated in their vehicles during hot weather and carrying water can help them deal with high temperatures," said the Highways Agency. "We want travellers to enjoy the good weather and not suffer any discomfort from the effects of dehydration"
Vehicles should be well maintained to avoid breaking down in hot weather.
Drivers can check the latest information on weather and road conditions before they set off, and during their journey.

How to sell your car
Ensure it is professionally valeted inside and out (pay to have this done if necessary). Have any major imperfections such as dents, rust or interior fabric tears repaired.
Ensure the car was serviced recently and has some MOT.
Advertise with a picture in the local press and the most popular classified magazines in this area. Follow this format for the advert:
<Manufacturer> <Model variant e.g. Gti> <mileage> <engine size> <year and number plate Mark e.g. X or 52>. <Key added extras and specification>. <Full Service History (if there is)> Condition as new, sale due to <reason>. <Price>. No offers.
When someone visits, be helpful and honest, let them test-drive the car, but go with them and check they are insured. Your car will sell easily.

Terms of Business
Many ADIs appear to be unaware that a young person, under the age of 18, cannot be held accountable in law for any debt, except for 'necessaries', and that driving lessons do not fall within the legal definition of 'necessaries'. This is why it is always advisable, in the case of under-18s, to obtain in advance the signature of a parent or guardian to the instructor's Terms of Business.
Please checkout the NOTICE OF LESSON CANCELLATION page at the DIA website.
