Driving Tip of the Month

Dealing with Traffic calming measures.

Road narrowing, central islands and chicanes.

  • Roads may be narrowed by 'build outs' on one or both sides of the road.
  • You will be shown warning signs indicating which side of the road narrowing occurs.
  • Give way road marking and road signs will advise priority.
  • You should not accelerate as you approach the narrowing, but be prepared to slow down or stop if necessary.
  • Don't try and squeeze through at the same time as cyclists or motorcylists. Hold back and allow them room to pass.

More information can be found in the Highway Code Rule 131

mobile phone More than half of motorists (53%) cannot tell a genuine vehicle registration certificate (V5C) from a fake, and a fifth of motorists don’t know what a V5C certificate is for, according to a DVLA survey of 1300 drivers. The results are a massive concern to DVLA and the police, as fake and stolen V5Cs are being used increasingly by criminals to disguise the identity of a stolen vehicle to fool motorists into buying ‘ringed’ or cloned vehicles.

For as little as £3, and with your mobile phone, you can check that car you are looking to buy. More

Renault Clio ll / Campus on the test

DSA logo There is concern over a faulty bonnet catch on the Renault Clio ll / Campus. This affects driving tests using this vehicle.
Vehicles are not subject to a recall – however the candidate is required to provide evidence from the dealer showing that the vehicle has been checked. More

If you are unsure if any other vehicle you intend to use on a driving test is affected, check this link from the DSA website

Call to ban smoking while driving
With a smoking ban already in place in Scotland, Ireland and Wales and shortly in England, The Highway Code lists smoking while driving as a distraction.
Road safety officers are calling on the government to ban smoking behind the wheel to cut the number of accidents. More
Police cracking down on tinted car windows
Police forces across the country are cracking down on tinted car windows.
The law states front windows must allow 70% of light through; the front windscreen 75%. More
Speeding fines to pass £1bn a year
Drivers could be coughing up more than £1.2billion in speeding fines by 2010
A rise in Gatsos has seen convictions rocket by an average 30 per cent annually since 1998. Latest full-year Home Office figures show more than two million people exceeded the limit, with 91 per cent caught on film.
If the trend continues, within three years, nine million motorists will get points annually. A recent survey found nine out of 10 drivers break laws which could affect their licences, although nearly all claimed it was a genuine mistake or an oversight, according to accessories firm Car Parts Direct.
    Parking fines hit £100m mark!
A record number of parking tickets are being issued to motorists - and the figure looks set to rise.
The number of Penalty Charge Notices handed out by local authorities rose by nearly 20 per cent to a massive 3.4 million in 2005, according to the latest report by the National Parking Adjudication Service.

A New Car for Your Driving School
Thinking of buying a new car for your driving school? Here are some things to check on, to see if your chosen vehicle meets the DSA driving test criteria. Electronic parking brakes are not allowed unless they can be manually over ridden. Further to this you need to be aware that some cars are now fitted with an electric (as opposed to electronic) parking brake.
This function appears to be operated by means of a button but still requires the driver to co-ordinate the parking brake (hand brake) with the clutch and accelerator when moving off. This arrangement tests the skills required and is therefore acceptable for the purposes of the driving test. Before such a vehicle is presented for test, check to see whether the vehicle will, with the vehicle in neutral, roll on a gradient if the parking brake is released.
