Metric road signs on the way

road sign FORMER Labour leader Neil Kinnock has thrown his weight behind a report which says Britain could go metric with its road signs within five years.
Lord Kinnock says in a report by the UK Metric Association that the continued use of miles was the country's "most obvious example of the muddle of measurement units".

It has also been reported that all metric road signs will be in place before the London Olympics at a cost of more than a billion pounds.

  • Litter louts stubbed out
Drivers throwing cigarette ends from their cars are to be smoked out with the help of the DVLA. Offenders in County Durham face £50 fines from the City Council in the first deal of this kind with the licensing authority.
"If a warden sees cigarette litter being thrown from a car, they will take the number and trace the owner to send them a fine," said the council's technical services manager, Andrew Jackson.

    The Docs have it!
Surgeons are the people most likely to have a personalised number plate, a new survey of more than one million drivers says. Special plates are also popular with oil rig workers, lorry drivers, police inspectors and wedding photographers.

    Sticky end for car thieves?
Splat's the way to do it! Traffic police in Los Angeles, home to 600 car chases a year, are testing glue-based 'darts' that will let them get stuck into joyriders.
And if the trials prove successful, they could signal a gooey end to dangerous, high-speed pursuits. The technology uses gas-propelled tracker darts which are launched from a squad car's radiator grille to tag the target vehicle. Officers can then back off and watch the crooks' progress on a computer screen.
