Driving Tip of the Month

How to Park on Hills

When parking, try and do this well away from bends, junctions and hilltops. These are all places where the driver's view is already restricted and parking your car in an unsafe place will increase the danger by focing others on the wrong side of the road.

If your handbrake fails the gear should still hold the vehicle but if all fails, because you have turned your wheel the vehicle will not roll because it will rest on the kerb.
Our video shows the correct way to secure your vehicle when parking Uphill or Downhill (best with a broadband connection)

Muslim women identity Checks

Muslim women are having their face veils removed so their identities can be checked before they take driving tests.

The move by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) follows a spate of cases in which bogus learner drivers impersonated friends or relatives and took the test for them.

Now the DSA has ordered female test examiners to discreetly remove the face veil - or nikab - from Muslim women in a private room along with a female chaperone or interpreter. More

Road Toll Tax UPDATE from last Month's Newsletter
Tony Blair has written a reply to more than 1.7 million people who signed a petition on the Downing Street website against road pricing.
In his reply, the PM sets out the government's views on national road pricing, stressing that no decision has yet been made. Mr Blair says he sees the petition and his email as "the beginning, not the end" of the debate. More
Plea to drivers over mobile use
The grieving sister of a woman who was killed in a crash caused by a lorry driver using his mobile phone has called for phone use in cars to stop.
Motorists who use hand-held mobile phones while driving will now face tougher penalties.
The maximum fixed penalty fine has doubled to £60, and three points can be added to offenders' licences. More |||Video News
Drink-drive limit could be halved
The drink-drive limit could be almost halved and random roadside breath tests introduced, it has emerged.
Under the plans, a pint of lager or a large glass of wine would put many motorists over the limit. More
Criminal records check for driving instructors
Criminal record checks on driving instructors begin next month in order to increase the safety of vulnerable learner drivers.
Driving Standards Agency’s Chief Executive Rosemary Thew said the introduction of criminal checks reinforced the rule that instructors should be ‘fit and proper’ people to spend time alone with teenagers. More

Motorcycle instructors invited to join new register of trainers
The ACE Motorcycle Café in Wembley will play host to the latest step forward in road safety for motorcyclists. The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) is putting in place a new voluntary register of post-test motorcycle trainers to help riders continue to improve their skills, and will be inviting instructors to join.
More At the DSA website.

Currently one in five road deaths involve a motorcyclist, something the Government is determined to address. This register is being implemented by the DSA as part of the Government’s Motorcycle Strategy, which has the objective of reducing casualties to motorcyclists.
