United Nations bans texting by drivers of its vehicles

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said last week he was banning all drivers of United Nations vehicles from texting while driving, to back efforts to curb a practice believed to kill thousands of people each year.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said that in the United States alone, nearly 6,000 people died and more than half a million were injured in "distracted driving" crashes in 2008. Read More

Is this a new eco-friendly Coalition Government?
With the historic Coalition agreement by the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats, the two parties have agreed to implement a full programme of measures to fulfil their joint ambitions for a low carbon and eco-friendly economy.
Tory's strong support of zero-emission electric and low carbon plug-in hybrid vehicles. With more emphasis than the previous government, they are to accelerate the development of a 'smart (electricity) grid' to kick-start an electric vehicle revolution.


New transport minister to "end war on motorists"
Philip Hammond, the new transport minister has said he will end Labour's "war on motorists" as he looks to clamp down on speed cameras, clamping firms and plans for road-charging. The Tory cabinet member has only just got his new job, but has already pledged to ease the pressure on the nation's 33m drivers, saying: "Motoring has got to get greener, but the car is not going to go away.

RAC report says drivers still safe at 70 According to a report published by the RAC Foundation, the 3.7m drivers born before the Second World War are among the safest people on our roads - and forcing them to take compulsory retests will limit their mobility, be hard to police and do little to reduce accidents.
