Driving Tip of the Month

Steering - The Push and Pull Method

To steer accurately you should look well ahead at where you are going. You must be able to operate the main controls without looking at them. Looking down will result in your car wandering from side to side.
Try to keep both hands on the wheel when braking or cornering.

The examiner on your driving test will expect you to:-

  • Hold the steering wheel at either the ten-to-two or quarter-to-three position
  • Steer at the correct time and smoothly
  • Avoid crossing your hands over one another when turning
  • Avoid letting the wheel spin back through your hands when straightening up.
  • Keep to the left normally
  • Avoid weaving in and out between parked cars
  • Obey lane markings

Driver passes seventh test at 74

A 74-year-old woman has passed her driving test after failing six times in the past.

Lucy Hill, from Wolverhampton in the West Midlands, said she was urged to take her seventh test by friends after the death of her husband.

    Pass Plus Letter Campaign

DSA logo To further promote Pass Plus, the DSA is sending a letter to all successful car practical test candidates explaining the benefits of the scheme. The trial started on 6th September and will last for 6 months. The aim is to publicise Pass Plus to newly qualified drivers at the most opportune time when they may be most likely to start the programme. Along with the benefits of the scheme the letter gives advice on how to find instructors who are registered and gives a brief explanation of the course content.

DVLA delvers extra warning to vehicle tax evaders
DVLA launches a new vehicle tax reminder initiative this month to warn motorists that they will be caught if they fail to tax their vehicle on time.
By targeting untaxed vehicles, DVLA aims to make roads safer and also help reduce vehicle crime. Because vehicle tax can only be purchased with a valid MOT and insurance certificate, reducing the number of untaxed vehicles also reduces the number of uninsured and potentially un-roadworthy vehicles on our roads. Filming resumes on Top Gear show
Filming for a new series of the BBC's Top Gear programme has resumed, 15 days after presenter Richard Hammond crashed in a jet-powered car.
He suffered a brain injury but doctors were amazed by the initial rapid progress of his recovery.
A BBC spokeswoman said: "We are resuming filming parts of the next series that don't involve Richard." More

WHEN LIGHTS BLOW DURING SHOW ME TELL ME
A number of ADIs have written to complain, in very angry terms, about driving tests being terminated when a light bulb blows, when being switched on, following candidates being asked to show how they would check that the headlights were working properly.
The DSA has sent out a circular, instructing all examiners to terminate any test where a bulb is found not to be working and this cannot be put right within a few minutes of it being noted. The DSA's Chief Examiner has made clear that a car with a defective light is not 'suitable for the purposes of the test' and that DSA has a duty to protect its staff from the risk of being on-duty in a car without fully functioning lights.
