Driving Tip of the Month

How 2 Deal With Driving In Fog

fog This time of the year usually starts with Fog on some morning.
Driving in heavy fog is like driving with a blindfold on.

Statistically it's the most dangerous driving hazard in existence. No matter how important the trip is, it's not worth gambling your life.
By far the safest thing to do if you run into fog is to move well off the road and wait for the fog to lift.
However, the simple and safe solution is not always the most practical, so read on to find out what driving procedures should be followed in fog. More Info

DSA launches online YouTube channel

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has announced the launch of its own video sharing channel on YouTube.
The channel – youtube.com/dsagov – is being used to post road safety videos which offer advice to test candidates and other road users.

'Are you ready?' is currently sent in DVD form to all candidates booking a theory test. The intention of using YouTube is that production of the DVD will be scaled down as more customers view it online. It will remain available on DVD on request.

Case study-style question as part of your Theory Test

From the 28th September 2009 you will need to answer a case study-style question as part of your Theory Test.
In your test you will be presented with one case study where you will be required to answer 5 questions that are related to the scenario displayed on screen. Each question will still be in the multiple choice format as with the other Theory Test questions.
You will still need to answer 50 multiple choice questions that are broken down as follows:
~ 45 multiple choice questions
~ 5 multiple choice questions that relate to the case study
An example of the type of case study question is shown here

Toyota iQ unsuitable for test purposes
The DSA have announced that with immediate effect the Toyota iQ is not being accepted for driving tests.
According to the DSA’s Technical Standards department, the thick B- and C-pillars and rear ‘porthole’ windows prevent the examiner from being able to see clearly at angled junctions.
The iQ is the smallest four-seat mass production car in the world. Four-seater is a generous description; it would not be practical for accompanying interpreters or supervising examiners either on a driving or check test.
Toyota advice is that any instructor who owns an iQ and needs to part-exchange it for another car should contact their local franchised Toyota dealer.
The Toyota iQ joins an honourable list of cars deemed unsuitable for test, including Mini convertibles and the Ford Street Ka. More
OZZY HITS THE ROAD AFTER PASSING DRIVING TEST
ozzy After Reporting in our April Newsletter that OZZY OSBOURNE was taking driving lessons we are now pleased to report that OZZY has now passed his driving test, at the NINETEENTH attempt.
The former Black Sabbath rocker took to his Twitter.com account to tell fans the happy news on Thursday night (24Sep09).
He 'tweeted', "I just passed my driving test. Took me 60 years, but I did it! For the first time in my life, I'm legal to drive, so watch out!"

UK motor industry bounces back
There's positive signs of recovery in the UK motor industry with recently released figures showing a 6% rise in new car sales in August compared to the same time last year. A total of 67,006 cars were sold with about one-in-four of those being bought under the government Scrappage Scheme.
Suspected illegal driving instructors
The DSA have reported that there are approx 600 cases of suspected illegal driving instructors currently being investigated across the UK.
Last month the DSA and the press have reported a handful of cases that have gone to court.
These include a so called instructor from Woodbridge, Suffolk, another from Newport, Gwent, one from Slough and an Offender from Southgate

Illegal driving instructors.... are they working in your area?

ADI CORNER

‘pull-push’ steering

After much recent pressure from within the professional driver coaching industry, the DSA have made an important amendment to their driving test marking guidelines.
It seems to be a little known fact that a driver taking their driving test will not be faulted for simply failing to adopt the ‘pull-push’ steering technique. In truth, this has been the case for over 20 years, but the ‘pull-push’ method has become so ingrained within the industry that many driving instructors still vehemently insist on its use.
A new document DT1 (DSA Examiners Guidance Notes) can be found here. "To ensure uniformity, when conducting car or vocational tests and ADI qualifying examinations, only assess the candidate’s ability to control the vehicle and do not consider it as a fault if, for example, they do not hold the steering wheel at ten to two or quarter to three or if they cross their hands when turning the steering wheel. The assessment should be based on whether the steering is smooth, safe and under control." (Crown Copyright)

However, we still feel at the use of the ‘pull-push’ steering is the best and safest way to control a steering wheel when going around corners.
