Driving Tip of the Month

Dealing with a Busy Road

When learning to drive, you must be able to move off safely and smoothly without creating a dangerous situation for other road users.
Anticipate the actions of other road users including pedestrians and cyclists.
In busy situations, try and anticipate the traffic early, so you can ease off on the accelerator in good time.

Under-25s Face Night Driving Ban

Young drivers will be banned from driving at night or taking passengers under radical planss being drawn up by the insurance industry
The tough measures are aimed at cutting the soaring number of accidents involving young, usually male drivers.
About 50% of young men have a crash in their first year of driving. Accidents usually take place late at night and often involve several teenagers squeezed into one car.
The new proposals are similar to rules already in place in California. They apply to drivers under 25 for the first year after they pass their test.
Young motorists would not be allowed to take more than 2 passengers. They would be banned from night driving, probably between 11pm and 5am
The association is discussing the proposals with road safety groups before publishing them at its conference on motor insurance on September 20th.

Norwich Union announced earlier this week that it is to put up the cost of its car insurance by an average of 16 per cent, with the charges for young male drivers rising by up to 40 per cent.
Other car insurers are set to follow suit due to spiralling costs.

Drivers concerned by the price of their insurance are urged to look online for the best deals.

Up To 4,000 Driving Tests Cancelled.

On Monday 4th September, support for the one day strike involving driving examiners and administrative staff working for the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) remained solid, leading to the cancellation of up to 4,000 driving tests, the Public and Commercial Services union said.
The one day strike is the second in a dispute over the threat of office closures, job losses and changes to working practices. This action follows the first stoppage in July which led to 42% of driving tests being cancelled. A subsequent work to rule has also led to the disruption and cancellation of driving tests across the country. More

  • Blind man was 'dangerous driver'
We thought we had heard it all. But now a blind man has been convicted of dangerous driving.
A blind man, who lost his eyes in a bomb blast, has been convicted of dangerous driving after police spotted his car on the wrong side of the road.
Omed Aziz, 31, was being aided as he drove through Oldbury, West Midlands, by an allegedly banned driver in the passenger seat. More

'Quiet' tyres to get tax breaks
Drivers could soon slash the price of their car tax if they agree to fit new 'quiet' tyres Motorists opting for low-noise rubber would automatically be dropped down one vehicle excise duty band, if recommendations wheeled out by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) get the go-ahead.
The discounts would be similar to those offered to drivers of low-emissions vehicles - and owners could also be exempt from congestion charging. The recommendations were based on the TRL's recent Government-funded research into the impact of noise pollution. More

    Thieves target Sat-Nav
Motorists are losing out in more ways than one by having their satellite navigation systems stolen as their insurance policy often refuses to cover such high cost items.
The hi-tech devices are top of the car thief's list of target car items as they are easy to snatch and conceal as they make their getaway.
All too often, drivers are being told by their insurance companies that only £100 can be claimed for such expensive items, despite most of the systems on the market costing at least double this amount. More

    Supermarket sweep
Finding somewhere quiet and safe for pupils to practise manoeuvres, such as bay parking, is getting pretty tricky these days. And it's not just the residents of leafy suburbia complaining; now even supermarkets are turning nasty. Driving Instructor was recently given a copy of this letter, which was sent by DIA member Giselle Le Fort to the Manager of his local Waitrose.
