Motorway Red X with Flashing Red Lights

The Red X with flashing red lights, commonly referred to as "Flashing Red X", is one of, if not the, most important sign that you are likely to see on UK motorways.

A red light, with the red X, warns you that you must not go beyond the red light in that lane.

If the red light or red 'X' flashes on a slip road, you must not enter it.

If the red light or red 'X' flashes on the central reservation, you must not go beyond the signal in any lane.

In this video Quentin Willson investigates why this Red X means "Lane Closed".
